Wallick-Hendy Properties Going Green

Columbus, OH (04/30/2009) -

Wallick-Hendy Properties is the second firm in the nation to renovate properties under the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Mark to Market Green Initiative. Renovations began this month at two developments using environmentally-friendly, sustainable building and renovation principles—Eco-Village, a 60-family town home development in Fostoria, OH; and St. Aloysius, a 48-unit, senior housing development in downtown Covington, KY. The projects will be complete in the fall.

Both developments will receive the following upgrades:

  • New Energy Star-rated appliances
  • Low VOC and recyclable kitchen cabinets
  • Low VOC and recyclable carpeting
  • Low E glass windows
  • Low flush toilets
  • Low flow faucets in kitchens and bathrooms
  • Integrated pest management systems
  • Additional insulation
  • Recycling programs for residents
  • Compact fluorescent light bulbs in all lighting fixtures
  • A green playground using recycled materials at Eco-Village
  • Wireless utility and atmosphere monitoring devices that track upgrades for HUD

In addition, all residents will receive free training on using green cleaning products.

“We are proud to partner with HUD to green our properties and take a leadership role in this important national effort,” said Wallick-Hendy Properties President Bob Daines.

HUD's Office of Affordable Housing Preservation administers the Mark to Market program. Mark to Market refinances property owners’ debt, aligning it with current interest rates and market rents for the area. It also pays for the properties’ repairs, replacements and rehabilitation.
